New contract : Elogen is selected by ENERTRAG for the supply of a 10 MW PEM electrolyser

Elogen, a GTT group company, announces the signature of a contract, in December 2022, with the European specialist in renewable energy solutions ENERTRAG SE to design and produce a PEM electrolyser (Proton Exchange Membrane) with a power of 10 MW. Elogen will install its technology on a site near Magdeburg, in Germany, in 2024. The project is one of many green hydrogen projects currently developed by ENERTRAG in North and Middle Germany.

The Elogen electrolyser will produce up to four tonnes of green hydrogen per day, the electrical energy needed for electrolysis coming exclusively from renewable sources.

The electrolyser will enable the power system to compensate for wind and solar fluctuations. The green hydrogen produced will contribute to decarbonising heavy industry and long-distance trucking, to producing electricity in the event of “dark-doldrums”[1] and, in the medium term, to supplying the 100% hydrogen pipelines of the gas transmission system operator ONTRAS.

Jean-Baptiste Choimet, Managing Director of Elogen, declares: ” We are particularly proud that the Elogen membrane electrolysis technology has been chosen for its performance by ENERTRAG, a leading European player in innovative renewable energy solutions. This is also an important step for Elogen since this contract concerns an electrolyser with a capacity of 10 MW, confirming the scaling-up of our technology for larger projects.”

Manuela Blaicher, Head of PtX Project Development at ENERTRAG SE, states: “ENERTRAG is very proud to announce this step towards a 10 MW electrolysis capacity in Germany with many possibilities of deployment, both in industry and in the mobility sector. With this reference plant, we will produce hydrogen from renewable energies on an industrial scale.”

[1] “Dark doldrums” (from the German “Dunkelflaute”) is a period during which there is neither wind nor sun, making it impossible or very limited the production of solar or wind energy.

About ENERTRAG

ENERTRAG is one of the largest renewable-energy companies in Germany, and the largest in Brandenburg. We develop, build, own and operate integrated energy plants that produce reliable electricity, green hydrogen and heat from wind and solar power. ENERTRAG has more than two decades of experience in successful and efficient renewables-projects development and implementation. We realized projects with a total capacity of 2 GW and raised more than €2 billion of debt and equity. We produce close to 2 TWh of electricity per year from our own assets and manage over 1,000 wind turbines from our own fleet and for clients. Our close to 1,000 employees combine all the competencies required for successful operation and efficient maintenance, for local-community-oriented planning and reliable construction of energy plants and grids up to complete interconnected power plants. We are always one energy ahead – be it in grid solutions, storage solutions or in sector coupling with power-to-heat or green-hydrogen plants.
